Northern Region Police Commissioner Richard Luhanga says the new roadblock at Chiondo Lagoon on the M1 in Karonga will improve security in the district.
He said this on Saturday when he officially opened the roadblock constructed by Lotus Africa Limited to the tune of K4 million.
Luhanga said: “Many people enter the country illegally using uncharted routes.
“This roadblock will check all immigrants en route to Mzuzu and Lilongwe.”
He also said he expected human trafficking cases and smuggling of goods to decline following the commissioning of the new roadblock.
On his part, Lotus Africa Limited managing director Theo Keyter said they wanted to help police fight human trafficking which is increasing in the country.
In his remarks, group village head Kishombe thanked Lotus Africa Limited for the initiative.
“I urge people not to vandalise the roadblock,” he said.
The company also donated office furniture and a container to be used as an office at the roadblock.
